Days Out In Devon: Haldon Forest Park

Mr Lovelygrey is a solitary beastie and ten years ago he used to love Haldon Forest near Exeter.  Then he was able to wander for hours without seeing a soul but alas this is no more.  For the Forestry Commission have now turned it into a tourist destination,   and though it is still a beautiful spot it has lost some of its former tranquility as it is now criss-crossed with popular bike and walking trails.  Consequently Mr Lovelygrey has boycotted the place and now favours a different woodland location for his walks.

For cheap days out it's still a popular choice for me and Louis.  There's a sandy play area, den building is encouraged and the play trail, dotted with charming wooden installations, has dark, secret passages to explore if a seven year old is feeling particularly brave.

Although Mr Lovelygrey baulks at the £2 parking charge I'm not too fussed as it seems a fair price to pay for somewhere that can provide enough entertainment for the day for a lively band of primary school boys.  For the more flush there's Segway hire and  Go Ape, the subject of a former post. And I nearly forgot the Ridge Cafe with it's attractive decked area overlooking the playground where the coffee ain't half bad!
